Solar fabrics
Open-weave fabrics can soften glare and retain some outward view in daylight. They do not automatically provide privacy when indoor lights are on.
Light-filtering fabrics
These soften incoming daylight with varying levels of translucency and texture. Hold the sample against your glass to see how it looks with daylight behind it.
Blackout fabrics
An opaque material suits a room-darkening goal. Discuss the edges, brackets and mounting overlap as well as the fabric.

Look at fabric against the light
A swatch can appear different beside the window than it does on a table. Compare it with daylight behind it, then consider the room after dark. Solar openness, fabric color and the brightness on each side affect what you can see.
Choose how the shade will mount
Inside mounting can preserve the outline of the trim; outside mounting can overlap the opening. The available depth and handle clearance affect both. Decide whether you want the roll visible or a compatible top treatment included.
Plan sliders and large windows separately
